The fact that a Porsche 964 Carrera 2 RS (above) sold for a record-breaking £215,000 at auction recently has been big news that has caused shockwaves around the Porsche world. That’s big money, even for a super-low-mileage RS, and will undoubtedly have a positive effect on prices of other 964s and, indeed, in classic Porsches in general.
We’ve seen noticeable increases in air-cooled 911 prices over the last year and, in turn, increased demand for good examples. 993s, in particular, get snapped up very quickly, with people almost fighting over them. We had the same thing with a trio of 964 Carrera 4 Anniversaries we had recently – each sold very quickly with a huge number of enquiries for each one. Indeed, we currently have a similar – and even rarer – 964 at the moment, this Carrera 2 Cabriolet Turbolook (below). Another surefire investment.
The problem, if it can be called such, with these increases in value, is that people are becoming loath to drive their rare Porsches. I remember when the 964RS was considered a great – and inexpensive – trackday car. Now, few owners are brave enough to risk their £100,000-plus RSs on the road, never mind the racetrack. That’s why there’s been a proliferation of RS replicas or ‘recreations’. These vary a lot. Some are little more than standard (and often tired) 964s with lowered suspension and an ‘RS’ badge on the back, others are indistinguishable from the real thing. In between are perhaps the most interesting – modified 964s that are in the spirit of the RS but with modern suspension and other performance modifications that, while not true to the original RS, do make for an entertaining drive. We have this great example of such a car (below)
Alternatively, you may want to consider a modern Porsche – one that is a classic in the making. This stunning and rare 997 Speedster (below) for instance.
Of course, as great as the Speedster is, it’s not an everyday car, in which case a 996 Turbo (below) is the way to go – astonishing performance for the money and a good one is unlikely to depreciate. We have three for sale.
