Triumph TR5

£42,995.00

This Triumph TR5 dates from 1968 and is a rare car, indeed. Essentially, it has the body of the earlier TR4 with the fuel-injected straight-six engine that was later used in the TR6. It was claimed to be the British production sports car with petrol injection and less than 2000 were built, with just 1161 right-hand drive examples sold in the UK.

This example is unusual in that it is in remarkably original, unrestored condition. The chassis is solid, as is the bodywork, with the exception of some slight bubbling in places and surface rust under the bonnet around the brake master cylinder. The New White paintwork appears to be almost all original, too, albeit tired in places. The wire wheels are original, too.

The black interior boasts the original seats, steering wheel and dash. It’s all in good condition with the exception of a patch on the driver’s seat bolster and some damage to the left-hand dash plastic trim (see photographs).

The Triumph was owned by a professor relative of our director, Philip Raby, from 1982 until he died recently. We are selling it on behalf of his widow. The gentleman hardly drove the car and kept it in a dry garage, taking it out for a yearly MoT and checkover. There are MoT certificates dating right back to 1976 when the odometer read 76,600. When the last owner bought it,  the reading was 85,033. Today the mileage is 88,867, so the car has hardly been used for the last 40 years!

The Triumph comes with an unused full tonneau cover and new, unfitted rear internal trim pieces, plus some workshop manuals.

The engine will be freshly rebuilt before the car is sold.

We shall service the car and give it a mechanical checkover and an MoT, so it will be all ready to drive.

While by no means a concours example, this  is nonetheless a rare opportunity to obtain a Triumph TR5 in original condition. So many have been messed around with; fitted with different wheels, seats, steering wheel and the like. This could be kept as it is, and enjoyed with its patina of age, or it could be treated to a light restoration. Alternatively, it would be a good, sound start for a full restoration to as-new condition. The choice is yours!
