Here’s an interesting classic Porsche. It’s a 1966 912 that’s been fully restored and, at the same time, subtly and sympathetically updated. It looks fantastic and is a joy to drive.

The Porsche is finished in white with contrasting black 15-inch alloy wheels, and black decals.

The interior is black with a wooden dashboard. It has been fitted with a lovely pair of bucket seats, beautifully trimmed with ventilated corduroy inserts.

The rebuilt engine has been updated to 1720cc and produces around 115rpm which, in such a lightweight car, gives sparkling performance. The power goes through a dogleg five-speed gearbox.

Originating from the USA, the Porsche was registered in the UK in 2019. Before that, it had a back to metal restoration, engine rebuild and mechanical overhaul in Spain (click here for photos). Since coming to this country, the car has had a lot of documented work done to bring it up to its present standard. Jobs of note include installing inertial reel seatbelts, attending to various electric issues, fitting new rear lights, renewing the front brake calipers, fitting new heat exchangers, overhaul the carburettors and much more. The car was serviced in June 2023, just 1000 miles ago.

The 912 is a fascinating piece of Porsche history. It was only made from 1965 to 1969, as an entry-level Porsche to replace the 356. Its 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine was from the last of the 356s and, being a lightweight unit, it gave the car a better weight distribution and, therefore, better handling than the 911 of the day. It also means the entire car is lighter, at under 1000kg in standard form.
