1973 Porsche 911T
This 1973 Porsche 911T has been sympathetically modified and restored to create one of the most fun 911s we have ever driven. It is guaranteed to put a grin on your face, whether you are on road or track.
The Porsche started life as a Californian-market left-hand drive 2.4-litre 911T (one of the last pre-impact-bumper cars to be built, in July 1973) which the previous owner imported to the UK and then spent several years and a lot of money turning it into his perfect 911, inspired by the cars he’d seen in the American R-Gruppe club. After several false starts, the 911 finally ended up as the wonderful car you see today. At its heart is a modified 2.7-litre flat-six that has just been built to RS specification by well-known Porsche expert Russell Lewis at RSR Engineering. It features 9.5:1 high-compression pistons, PMO carburettors, a Dansk twin-outlet exhaust and a Carrera 3.2 oil cooler, all of which combine to give an estimated output of around 200bhp. This is linked to a fully rebuilt five-speed 915 gearbox with a Wevo sprung-gate, short-shift gearlever. The engine has covered only 1000 miles since the rebuild, and has just had its running in service.
The Porsche’s bodyshell has had a full glass-out, back to metal respray in a lovely Gulf Blue with orange side decals and gold rear badging, and is completely rust-free. All the sound-deadening has been replaced and there is a racing pedal box fitted.
The interior boasts a gorgeous set of Recaro Sports CS seats which have been tastefully retrimmed in genuine Porsche houndstooth fabric; the rear seat backs have also been trimmed with this. In addition, there are RS style door cards with a basketweave finish, which extends to the lower dashboard. The headlining and carpets are new, and there’s a period Becker Europa radio. A classic Momo Prototipo steering wheel finishes off the cockpit perfectly.
The suspension has been completely overhauled by classic Porsche specialist Francis Tuthill to ‘fast road’ specification, The suspension (which also includes uprated rear torsion bars was built by Tuthills to ‘fast road’ specification including their bespoke damper and strut inserts, plus Bilstein dampers and new bushes. The brake calipers have also been reconditioned and new discs fitted. A set of genuine Fuchs 7- and 8-inch inch rims complete the running gear.
There is nothing on this 911 that hasn’t received attention. The wiring loom has been removed, reconditioned and replaced, all the brake and fuel pipes are new, as are most of the rubber seals and trim. It really wants for nothing.
And the proof of the success of this project lies in the driving. Around 200bhp in a Porsche that can’t weigh any more than 1000kg makes for a lively and fun experience. The steering is super-light and responsive, while the uprated suspension ensures superb handling combined with a decent ride quality. The gearchange, with the Wevo shifter, is sublime and precise, while retaining the rear seats and soundproofing ensures that this is a Porsche that you can comfortably use for touring, and well as trackdays.
If you are looking for a pristine and original Porsche 911T, then this car isn’t for you. On the other hand, if you want a very well sorted 911 that has had a deep restoration and which will give you many miles of driving pleasure, then look no further than this Gulf Blue machine.
