Porsche 991 Targa with all new roof system

Porsche has just unveiled the 991 Targa with its all new roof system, at the Detroit Motor Show in the USA.

It’s been long known that the new 911 Targa would revert back to the lines of the classic Targa with its distinctive roll hoop, rather than the retracting glass roof system of the 993, 996 and 997 Targas. However, what’s not been known is just how the roof would work – the original 911 Targa had a lift out roof panel that stored in the boot but, these days, drivers want more convenience than that.

The solution was shown during the live webcast. The rear glass window lifts up and the roof folds away under, in much the same way as a Cabriolet roof. It all happens remarkably quickly, too. See the video below:

According to GT Porsche magazine, the new 991 Targa will be available from May 2014  in Targa 4 and Targa 4S form, priced from £86,281 and £96,316 respectively.

UnknownIt’s interesting that Porsche has chosen to resurrect the old Targa styling because, for many years, the Targa was considered the ugly duckling of the Porsche 911 words, compared to the sleek lines of the coupe.

However, we’re seeing a resurgence of interest in the classic 911 Targa, with prices and demand on the rise. Buyers aren’t worried about the inconvenience of the lift-out roof panel because, increasingly, they are buying a classic 911 as a weekend toy to use in nice weather, and the open roof is perfect on a sunny day. The introduction of the 991 Targa can only generate more interest in the classic version.

We have two classic 911 Targas in stock at present, a 964 and a 3.2. Please click here for details.
