Porsche 911 GT3 (997 gen1)

2006-2007

997 GT3 RS

The 996 GT3 proved itself to be a great trackday weapon that could also be used on the road. Porsche, therefore, had a hard act to follow when it introduced the 997 GT3 in 2006.

The new car’s 3.6-litre engine was based on that of the previous GT3 but reworked with a higher compression ratio and higher rev limit to produce 415bhp – an incredible achievement for a normally aspirated engine.

This made the 997 GT3 a very fast car, with 0-62mph taking just 4.3 seconds before going on to a top speed of 193mph.

The handling was a stage on from the earlier GT3, too, thanks to lower and firmer suspension, compared to the standard 997. Purists were shocked that the GT3 came as standard with PASM, but this was reworked from the standard system, and worked very well in both Normal and Sport modes.

Based on the narrow-bodied Carrera, the 997 GT3 was aerodynamically honed to give an overall Cd of 0.29. More important, though, was the 10kg of downforce over the front axle and 25kg at the rear at 190mph. This had very real effect on high-speed stability.

Another high-speed benefit was offered by the air intakes atop the engine cover. These rammed air into the intake system to give a power boost of up to 20bhp.

Inside, the 997 GT3 offered creature comforts such as climate control, PCM and electric windows, but a sporty environment was created by the use of Alcantara trim and Sports seats. The rear seats were deleted. A no-cost optional Clubsport package added a roll-cage, red six-point driver’s harness, fire extinguisher with mounting bracket and preparation for a battery master switch. The Clubsport package was only available in conjunction with the optional lightweight carbonfibre bucket seats with fire-retardant coverings.
