Porsche 911T Sportomatic

£69,995.00

Here’s a rare and lovely Porsche. It’s a left-hand drive 1971 911T Sportomatic that has had an extensive and sympathetic restoration at a cost of some £80,000 to bring back to its original specification.

The car looks wonderful, finished in its original burgundy with steel wheels. The interior is black leatherette, as per the original specification, although the seat side sections have been upgraded to high-quality Nappa leather.

The Porsche was originally registered in the USA and came to the UK in 2013 and the buyer then spent the next few years managing its restoration. The body was treated to a new rear wing, door skin, floorpans and rear bumpers, with genuine Porsche parts used wherever possible to ensure accurate panel fit. It then had a full back to metal respray with Porsche paint code 2424, with attention paid to keep the original look of the paintwork under the bonnet and engine bay. The steel wheels have been chrome powder-coated. The car has recently been ceramic coated.

Inside, the original dashboard has been re-covered, as have the seats and armrests. The dials have been restored and all rubber seals replaced. It’s a wonderful place to be.

The engine had done just 77,000 miles from new but, nevertheless, has been fully rebuilt by engine guru Nick Fulljames. High compression pistons brought it to European specification and the carburettors have been rebuilt (a spare set are included in the sale). The transmission was rebuilt by Sportomatic expert, Mike Bainbridge. It’s all matching numbers.

The suspension was rebuilt with new dampers and bushes, and parts power-coated. It has been kept to original specification.

This is one of the best Porsche 911 restorations we have seen. The attention to detail is astonishing. Please click here to see photos of the work in progress. Unusually, the car has been used and enjoyed since the restoration, with 10,000 miles under its belt, including a couple of trips to Italy.

The clever Sportomatic transmission was ahead of its time and allows clutchless gear changes with a conventional manual gearbox. As soon as you touch the gearstick to change gear, the clutch magically disengages without the need to press a pedal. If you are unable or unwilling to use a clutch pedal, then this is a novel and ideal solution. Please click here for a good description of Sportomatic.

Sportomatic was a rare option which Porsche offered from 1967 to 1978 and very few were sold in the UK. Over the years, many Sportomatics have, sadly, been converted to conventional manual transmission, which makes this lovely example a very rare and interesting car. Whether you have a need for clutchless transmission, are a Porsche collector, or are just looking for something a bit different, then this 911T is worthy of your attention. Interestingly, although the Sportomatic gives a more relaxed drive than a manual, the system was used in the Porsche 911R Sportomatic which ran to victory in the Marathan da la Route (84 Hours of Nurburgring) in 1967. One of the drivers was Vic Elford and this car comes with a poster signed by the man himself!

Also included in the sale is a genuine 911T owner’s manual and a rare Technical Manual.
