Porsche 911 2.7 Sportomatic
This 1977 Porsche 911 Sportomatic has been treated to a full body, mechanical and interior restoration at a cost of some €45,000. It’s now in quite stunning condition.
The work was done by well-known classic Porsche specialists Classic Carreras in Ireland and is fully documented. You can see an overview on their site by clicking here. The restoration included a back-to-metal respray with any rusty parts replaced or repaired, including new front wings. The engine was fully stripped down and rebuilt with Mahle pistons and barrels. The suspension and brakes were also sorted out, with new brake discs and callipers, and new dampers. The list of new parts is endless, including a stainless exhaust system, many rubber seals and much more.
The interior has been treated to a new carpet set and the seats retrimmed in the correct period pinstripe fabric. Nothing has been overlooked.
All this restoration work took place in 2015. Prior to this, there is a well-documented service history of this UK-supplied 911, with invoices going right back to 1981.
The clever Sportomatic transmission was ahead of its time and allows clutchless gear changes with a conventional manual gearbox. As soon as you touch the gearstick to change gear, the clutch magically disengages without the need to press a pedal. If you are unable or unwilling to use a clutch pedal, then this is a novel and ideal solution. Please click here for a good description of Sportomatic.
The Sportomatic transmission was a rare option which Porsche offered from 1967 to 1978 and very few were sold in the UK. Over the years, many Sportomatics have, sadly, been converted to conventional manual transmission, which makes this lovely example a very rare and interesting car. Whether you have a need for clutchless transmission, are a Porsche collector, or are just looking for something a bit different, then this 911E is worthy of your attention. Interestingly, although the Sportomatic gives a more relaxed drive than a manual, the system was used in the Porsche 911R Sportomatic which ran to victory in the Marathan da la Route (84 Hours of Nurburgring) in 1967!
We realise that Sportomatic isn’t to everyone’s taste, though. If you wish, we can convert the car to a conventional manual gearbox, so do get in touch to discuss.
