This is a fascinating and rare piece of Porsche history. It’s a left-hand drive 1970 911E with a Sportomatic gearbox. This clever system was ahead of its time and allows clutchless gear changes with a conventional manual gearbox. As soon as you touch the gearstick to change gear, the clutch magically disengages without the need to press a pedal. The Porsche was originally delivered to the USA in 1970 and was registered in the UK in 2017. It has received a full body and mechanical restoration. The bodyshell was stripped back to bare metal and resprayed in the correct and original Light Ivory paint, which is the perfect colour for 911s of this era. The 2.2-litre engine has been fully rebuilt by well known Porsche specialists Strasse. The interior has also been restored, with the seats retrimmed in the original black leatherette with basketweave inlay, and new carpets fitted. The period radio has cleverly been updated with Bluetooth phone connectivity. The entire car is in gorgeous condition and ready to enjoy.

The Sportomatic transmission was a rare option which Porsche offered from 1967 to 1978 and it is believed that only 192 Sportomatic 911s were imported into the UK between 1968 and 1973. Over the years, though, many Sportomatics have, sadly, been converted to conventional manual transmission, which makes this lovely example a very rare and interesting car. Interestingly, although the Sportomatic gives a more relaxed drive than a manual, the system was used in the Porsche 911R Sportomatic which ran to victory in the Marathan da la Route (84 Hours of Nurburgring) in 1967!
