Porsche type numbers

Porsche type numbers

If you are new to the world of Porsches, the model numbers can be very confusing. The Porsche 911, for instance, can be a 964, 993, 996, 997 or 991 and may be badged ‘Carrera’ but they are all, in fact, 911s.

Going beyond the 911, even Porsches with a name, such as the Boxster, also have a Porsche type number which enthusiasts use to identify the various models. Which can make things even more confusing! As well as road cars, Porsche used type numbers for racecars, engines and gearboxes. And they even reused one or two numbers for different projects.

All these Porsche type numbers are three figures and begin with a ‘9’. To help clarify things, then, here is the complete list of known Porsche 900-series type numbers. Note that, although we have put ‘unknown’ by some numbers, it is possible that they have not been used by Porsche.
