I’ve always been fascinated by rare Porsches, especially ones from the 1980s and 1990s, so when I received an email about a 1994 964 Turbo 3.6, I sat up and paid attention.
The Turbo 3.6 was the second-generation of 964 Turbo, the original being the 3.3-litre car which was powered by a version of the earlier Turbo engine. The Turbo 3.6, though, had an engine based on that in the normally aspirated 964.
For the Turbo, the 3600cc engine was uprated with new cylinder heads that accommodated single spark plugs (the Carrera 2 and 4 used twin plugs per cylinder) and new camshafts. The single KKK turbocharger from the previous engine was carried over, essentially unchanged, but with new exhaust and wastegate designs. The engine management system was tweaked to suit the new arrangement.
The larger engine transformed the 911 Turbo. Not only was it faster and more powerful than ever, it was also more driveable and useable as an everyday car. It was the last Turbo to be rear-wheel-drive and to use a large single turbocharger and for that reason it has a place in Porsche history as the last and best of the wild 911 Turbos, before the power was tamed with four-wheel-drive and smaller twin turbos.
The new version of the car was instantly recognisable by its lovely three-piece 18-inch Speedline wheels which first appeared on the super-rae 964 Turbo S.
Any 964 Turbo 3.6 is rare – I believe only around 1400 were sold worldwide – but this particular one is even more so. It’s been fitted with the X88 Powerkit, which boosts power to 385bhp – a scary figure to go through the rear wheels only! It is thought that just 20 Turbos were so-equipped.
