996 Turbo

Rising classic Porsche prices

The fact that a Porsche 964 Carrera 2 RS (above) sold for a record-breaking £215,000 at auction recently has been big news that has caused shockwaves around the Porsche world. That’s big money, even for a super-low-mileage RS, and will undoubtedly have a positive effect on prices of other 964s and, indeed, in classic Porsches in general. We’ve seen noticeable increases in air-cooled 911 prices over the last year and, in turn, increased demand for good examples. 993s, in particular, get snapped up very quickly, with people almost fighting over them. We had the same thing with a trio of 964 […]

Why a 996 Carrera 4S is a good choice

I had  a call yesterday from a chap wanting to buy his first 911 – a 996. As soon as he said his budget was around £23,000, I immediately thought ‘Carrera 4S’. A few moments later, he said he fancied a 4S but was concerned it may be too extreme for a first 911. Not at all. The Carrera 4S is basically a standard 996 enhanced with a wide Turbo bodyshell and Turbo brakes and suspension, plus a classic full-width rear reflector. To my eye, it’s the best-looking 996 of all (especially from the rear) and is lovely to drive […]

The excitement of a Porsche 996 Turbo

Even after all these years, I still get a tingle of excitement every time I get into a Porsche 996 Turbo. I remember these cars being new and the height of desirability and offering unbeatable performance. Today, in my mind, they are just as desirable and the performance remains breathtaking. And now they have become so affordable that they really do offer unparalleled value for money, especially when you look at the car’s performance and handling capabilities. The 996 Turbo is a supercar that anyone can jump into and drive, whether to the local shops or the south of France. […]

Porsche 997 Turbo S for £27,000

Well, not exactly. However, this car is partway there. It is, in fact, a 996 Turbo that’s been given a 997 front end – an increasingly common upgrade which, I think, works well, even if, as here, the 996 rear end is retained (Porscheshop, by the way, offers neat LED 996 rear lights that go some way to update the look). The car’s a 2002 model with just 37,000 miles on the clock and has the worthwhile X50 engine upgrade (which was used in the 996 Turbo S) that ups power to 450bhp, plus a sports exhaust. According to the […]

Can a Porsche be too cheap?

I had a call from a chap who was considering buying a 996 Carrera 4S. The 4S is the Turbo-bodied car and sells for a premium over the standard car. He explained that he was concerned it was too cheap at £19,000. Now that is cheap for a decent 4S – they’re usually start at about £23,000 for a half-decent example. He said it had 88,000 miles on the clock, had a full service history and had been serviced 4000 miles ago. An HPI check had proved clear and the car seemed sound if a bit dirty. The seller, apparently, […]

Why we need Porsches

This video from Porsche promoted the 996 Turbo but the philosophy behind it applies to all Porsches and, indeed, other good things in life. Enjoy!

Turbo S plays a starring role

This month’s Total 911 magazine has a major feature on the 911 Turbo S series, from the 964 to the 997. And the main feature car is a beautiful 996 Turbo S which we had specially photographed in the studio. That car has now come up for sale and I’m selling it! It really is a lovely, low mileage, beautifully maintained example. Now, while standard 996 Turbos are relatively commonplace and some are surprisingly cheap, as with anything in life, you get what you pay for. The sub-£30,000 Turbos are early, high-mileage examples that, quite frankly, are often quite tired. […]

Is this the cheapest 996 Turbo in the UK?

A Porsche 996 Turbo for under £24,000? That’s remarkable and is surely a bargain supercar, when you consider the Turbo’s performance and pedigree. Look more closely at this example, though, and the price begins to make sense. It ‘s a 2000 car, so one of the first Turbos and has covered almost 104,000 miles, which is the highest I’ve seen on a Turbo. It doesn’t have PCM either but that’s no big deal as the sat-nav is now old technology. Not sure if the lady owner is a plus or a minus, though… 😉 The advert is rather vague, so […]

The automatic choice for the 21st century

I had an interesting chat with a client yesterday. He bought a 964 through me some time ago but later sold it. Now, though, he wants to return to Porsche ownership (these cars are so addictive!) and has set his heart on a 996 Turbo. A great choice as you get a lot of performance for your money and they’re tough, reliable machines. Now, most buyers of used 911s want a manual gearbox. Maybe it’s a macho thing but I must confess that I like the idea of changing gear myself. That said, the later Tiptronics and – more so […]
