Porsche Boxster Spyder RS60

I’ve just had a call from someone asking if a Porsche Boxster Spyder RS60 would be a good used buy. Based on the Boxster S of its day, the 2008 limited edition Spyder RS60 echoed the style of the Porsche 718 RS60 Spyder racecar from 1960. Visually, it was distinguished by a unique front spoiler, 19-inch SportDesign wheels, GT Silver Metallic paintwork, and a red or black hood. Inside, the RS60 had Carrera Red leather (or Dark Grey with the black roof) with a unique texture on the seat centres, door linings, steering wheel and handbrake lever, plus ‘RS60’ sill […]

Video road test of Porsche Cayman S

Recently, I was visited by Jack Pecoraro, who runs a YouTube channel called Number 27, which is all about cars. Jack was keen to road test a Porsche Cayman S for his channel, and it just so happens we have one in stock. He tempted me with the carrot of letting me drive his Lotus Esprit Turbo – a car I’d never driven before, and Jack had never tried a Cayman before. Actually, it turned out I wasn’t just driving the Lotus for fun, Jack was using it as his camera car, with GoPros clamped all around it. My job, […]

Porsches win What Car? awards

We know that Porsches are great cars but it’s good to get confirmation. In the recent What Car? awards, Porsche did particularly well. The new 718 Cayman was named Best Sports Car, with the judges saying: “…with balletic handling and wonderfully accurate steering, it is the perfect recipe for having fun on the road. Put simply, the Cayman will make you want to get up early for a blast on a country road, plus it won’t get fractious on long motorway drives. The Porsche is cracking value for money.” In addition, the new Porsche 911 Carrera PDK scooped first place […]

Collecting my first Porsche 964 from Germany, back in 2002

I’ve just received a lovely email from a long-term reader, who said he remembers well a piece I wrote in 2002 for 911 & Porsche World magazine. It was about me travelling to Germany to buy a Porsche 964 Carrera 4 for myself. It was nice to be reminded of it, as it was a thoroughly exciting trip (in more ways than one!). Here’s the text of the article – bear in mind it was written 15 years ago (where has the time gone?) so prices and attitudes have changed. There’s something strangely addictive about 911 ownership. Colleagues have long […]

Win a Porsche 911 engine for Christmas!

Here’s the ideal gift for the Porsche enthusiast at Christmas. The Porsche 911 Flat-Six Boxer Engine Set lets you build a fully-functional 1:4 model of a 1996 911 engine. The detailed replica features more than 280 components and has a transparent casing so that the moving parts can be seen when the battery-powered engine is switched on. It also features sounds so you get the full effect when it’s running. The Porsche 911 Flat-Six Boxer Engine is a great introduction for older children and motoring fans to the inner workings of such an iconic car engine. It includes a detailed […]

Porsche 356 Speedster sells for a record $605,000

A Porsche 356 Speedster has sold for auction in the USA for a record $605,000 – that’s around £480,000 and about three times the predicted sale price. The rare 1957 Porsche is claimed to be in very original condition, after being carefully stored since 1975.It’s a bit strange that it wasn’t cleaned before sale, as I am sure the metallic blue paintwork could be made to gleam with a bit of effort. Watch the video below to see the car being revealed. It’s a sure sign that classic Porsche prices are remaining firm and, indeed, going up in value. If […]

Porscheness – what makes a Porsche feel like a Porsche?

I’ve spent the last few days behind the wheel of a Porsche 964; a model of 911 I have always loved. And, increasingly, other people love the Porsche 964, too, and it has become firmly established as one of the great classic Porsche 911s. However, back in the early 1990s, Porsche’s then-new Technical Director, Ulrich Bez, wasn’t impressed. Thankfully, he appreciated the strength of the 911’s brand and persuaded his fellow board members not to drop the model in favour of an all-new car – an option which was on the cards. Instead, it was decided to carry the 911 […]

Porsche emojis for iOS10’s iMessages

Apple has just updated its mobile operating system to iOS10, which introduces lots of great new features and functions to your iPhone and iPad. One new feature is the ability to add ‘stickers’ to messages sent via iMessage. The system comes with a few stickers included and you can then add others from third parties. I was particularly taken with a set of Porsche emojis supplied by Automoji. They feature no less than 52 stylised front-end images of Porsches. It’s an eclectic mix of cars, including every Porsche Le Mans winner, a 924 Turbo, and even a 914, including a […]

There’s a new Porsche 718 Boxster but don’t forget the original

Today, Porsche unveiled its next generation Boxster, and what a departure it is! First, the car’s got a new badge – 718. Previously, Boxsters were badged just that – Boxster – with the model number something that Porsche nerds used to differentiate the different versions. Now, though, the car proudly wears its number, leaving the ‘Boxster’ badge as a suffix. It’s a return to the days of Porsches being given numbers – 356, 911, 944, 928 and so on. Having a name and a number seems a little confusing, although Porsche does point out that there is also the 911 […]

Why the Porsche Cayman is so good

We’ve had several Porsche Caymans in stock recently and it’s been great getting reacquainted with such a great car. The Cayman was introduced in 2006 and was essentially a Boxster with a fixed roof and hatchback. However, to describe it like that would be to do the Cayman an injustice. The stiffer bodyshell created by the steel roof meant that Porsche could endow the coupe with stiffer suspension settings to make the Cayman a better-handling car. It was initially offered in two guises. First on the market was the S which was powered by a mid-mounted 3.4-litre, flat-six boxer engine […]
