There are rumours flying around that Porsche will announce a 991 Turbo Targa very soon. Tim Hutton, a graphic designer friend, created this clever image of what a 991 Turbo Targa would look like, and graciously said I could share it here. Click here to see more of Tim’s work, much of which is car-related.

It’s an intriguing idea and one that makes sense, as the Turbo Cabriolet has long been a popular choice for buyers, especially in the UK (obviously because of our sunny climate!). Also, the Targa and Cabriolet share parts so, in theory, it wouldn’t be a difficult car to develop. With the new Targa receiving so many compliments about its looks and clever roof system, a 991 Turbo Targa would surely be a popular model.

It wouldn’t be the first time that Porsche has built a 911 Turbo Targa, either. One was available back in the 1980s although it’s rare to see them. We sold a very nice example a couple of years ago, which was super-rare because it was also a flatnose (below). You can see details here.

Interesting idea, but the Turbo no longer uses the same body as the C4/Targa – it’s wider still across the rear, which would require a redesign and engineering of the Targa’s roof as it corporates a section of rear body. There’s also the issue of fitting the Targa’s roof motors and roof panels in an area of the car already taken up with the plumbing for the Turbo’s engine. I’m sure it’s all possible but are there enough buyers to justify the cost? And a Turbo with a full length glass sunroof is almost the same.

Good points, Stuart. especially with regard to the different rear bodywork. Surely the roof motors and panels are similar to those of the Cabriolet, though?
