Once again, photos are floating around the internet of what is claimed to be the next Porsche 911 Targa.

The images show a roof based on the styling of the original Porsche 911 Targa with a prominent rollbar. The old Targa had a lift out roof panel which folded up and could be stored in the boot. However, I can’t believe that 21st century Porsche buyers would want that, so there must be more user-friendly solution. But what?

Is the roof a glass panel that slides back under the rear window as per the last-generation Targa? Or is it a folding panel that retracts into the roll hoop? In either case, I’m struggling to see how it would work, as the photos I’ve seen do not show anything above the side windows that a roof could slide along. The third solution I can think of is what is effectively the front part of a Cabriolet roof that would retract into the space behind the rear seats.

Or maybe Porsche has come up with something completely new, and reinvented the 911 Targa roof once again. Only time will tell.

Interest in the classic 911 Targas (pre-1993) has been increasing in recent months, with prices and demand rising. A new 911 Targa with similar styling is bound to boost this interest even more.

UPDATE

There is what appears to be a patent application for a Targa roof here.
