When is a 911 not a 911? When it’s a 964, 993, 996, 997 (above) or 991. Confusing? It certainly can be. Since the early 1960s, Porsche has used type numbers beginning with a nine for, not only road cars, but also racecars, prototypes and even transmission systems. The most well known of the latter being the 911’s 915 gearbox.
