Porsche Cayenne Turbo – the ultimate sports car?

Porsche Cayenne Turbo – the ultimate sports car?

Porsche 911s are my mainstay and they’re always a pleasure to have in stock. However, we’ve just taken on a Porsche Cayenne Turbo and I’ve been thoroughly impressed by it.

I’d not driven a Cayenne Turbo for some time, so I’d forgotten what superb cars they are. The cabin is spacious and supremely comfortable with lots of gadgets (including a heated steering wheel that moves out of the way when you exit the car) and acres of leather, and there’s plenty room for five people and a dog in the boot (or luggage for those five).

However, it’s the performance that really impressed me. Floor the throttle and the the 450bhp V8 roars, causing the big car to surge forward with astonishing speed – the 0-62mph time is just 5.3 seconds, which is fast for a sports car and ridiculous for a 4×4. You can jump out of a 996 Turbo and into a Cayenne Turbo and not feel short-changed in terms of performance.

The handling may not be up to 996 Turbo standards but considering the size, weight and height of the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, it’s pretty damn good, you just need to have to have the belief in the car to push it hard through corners. The active suspension allows you to choose a Sport setting that firms everything up so, once you’ve got your head around the fact that you’re driving a big 4×4, you’ll find the Cayenne to be a lot of fun to drive fast along winding roads, and the fact you’re so high up means that you have a good view of what’s ahead of you!

I doubt many Cayennes get used off-road but I remember once taking a press car along the Ridgeway – Britain’s oldest public right of way – and it was very capable on the muddy tracks. For most people, though, the four-wheel drive will come into its own in the snow, while the ground-clearance means you don’t need to worry about the odd excursion onto rough surfaces on the way to Waitrose.

The Porsche Cayenne Turbo is a luxury car, a sports car, a family estate, a long distance cruiser, an off-roader, a tow vehicle. In fact, it’s pretty much whatever you want it to be. It may just be the ultimate sports car!
