Everybody wants a Porsche 993 Carrera S or 4S

I’m getting a lot of enquiries from people wanting to buy a Porsche 993 Carrera S or 4S at the moment. And for good reason, too; these are lovely cars to look at and a joy to own.

The Carrera 4S came first in 1996 and is, essentially, a 993 Turbo in everything but its engine and rear spoiler. The interior is beautifully specced with every conceivable extra and the car features Turbo suspension and brakes. The wheels may have looked like the Turbo items but, in fact, had solid rather than hollow spokes to keep costs down.

The rear-wheel drive Carrera S followed in 1997 and was only made for one year. This had a less generous spec in that the brakes and suspension were standard 993 fare, as was the interior. What made the S stand out, though, was its unique engine cover lid with its distinctive and retro vertical divider. All wide-bodied 993s look great from the rear, but this simple addition made the Carrera S’s rear end divine.

It’s a cliche, I know, but the 993 was the last of the air-cooled Porsche 911s, and the wide-bodied cars are the pinnacle of the 993, with the exception of the Turbo, GT2 and RS.
