My Porsche cousin Jake

Raby is an unusual surname which you don’t come across much, yet it appears more than you’d expect in the relatively small world of Porsche.

There’s me, for starters, selling Porsches in southern England, and writing about them too.

Then there’s Raby Castle, up in northern England, where there’s a very good Porsche show every year.

And over in America there is Jake Raby. We not aware that we’re related but like to think we are! Jake runs Flat6 Innovations and Raby Engine Developments (RED to its friends). He’s a clever Porsche engineer and has built up an enviable reputation for his work on air-cooled VW and Porsche engines. He’s now turned his attention to the dark side – water-cooled Porsche engines – and developed the IMS Guardian, a clever device that warns of impending IMS bearing failure on 996 and 997 engines. I’m delighted to be a stockist of the IMS Guardian.

As president of Raby Enterprises, Jake seems to have a finger in a number of Porsche pies and it’s all exciting stuff. That’s him below – not sure what the gun thing’s all about though! 🙂

We’ve talked about doing some joint Porsche ventures and I’m sure we will. One day, we’ll have to meet up – maybe at the Raby Castle Porsche event…

Having known Jake for a number of years and having had a friendly rivalry surrounding type 4 conversions, let me say he is a stand up guy, and knows what he is doing! Oh and the gun thing, well he is a US Marine (there is no such thing as an ex-marine), so the gun thing is in the blood!

    Cheers

I am one of Jake’s somewhat local customers, in that I can drive my car there and leave it for service and be home in a couple of hours, but more importantly, upgrades. I have one of his “dark side” water cooled high HP 3.6 conversions in my 986S. He’s a developer, engineer, motor magician, Marine, and an enthusiasts of all sorts. I’m lucky since so many of his customers have to ship their cars, or their engines from all over the U.S., and Europe, particularly for his Type IV motors. I don’t have one of those yet, but I just haven’t found the right car to put it in!
