I needed to buy a Porsche 996 urgently for use in a magazine feature. However, as many of you know, the market is quiet coming up to Christmas, with buyers and sellers holding off.
I found a good one in Northern Ireland, a place I usually enjoy visiting but not at this time of year and in this weather.
Then a car cropped up in Northamptonshire which sounded tempting. A facelift 3.6 example with a full OPC history, same owner for five years, Aerokit and so on. In the box ticking contest, it did well for my purposes.
Now, normally a two hour drive to view a car wouldn’t faze me but I’m snowed under with work coming up to Christmas and also fighting an annoying chest infection. So I contacted my mate John Glynn who lives up that way. John’s more of a classic Porsche boy but I figured he’d do alright, so long as he explained to him what those radiators under the nose were for. 😉
John, who’s always reliable, came back with a sensible report on the car. It’s not perfect – I didn’t expect it to be – but there was nothing to put me off and nothing I couldn’t put right.
So a deal was done with the vendor and now the car’s mine for collection. Just one small problem; heavy snow is forecast over much of England, so I’ll have to be patient.
It’s not the first time I’ve bought a 911 unseen and just before Christmas. Some years ago I travelled to Hamburg in a wild gale to pick up a 964. Let’s hope this one proves as good as that was.
Sadly, I’ll have to sell the 996 once it’s served its purpose, so if you’re looking for a 996 in January, you’ll know where to come. In fact, I’ll have two for sale, as I’m also selling a lovely Carrera 4S!
